What's happened so far

Oops! Sorry everyone, I forgot to stick a message up here... msn_embarrassed

Fiona was dicharged from LRI on Monday just before lunch. She is now back at home and is feeling much better with regard to the sickness and tummy pains. Unfortunately it appears that she picked up some sort of bug while she was in hospital and so she's not feeling very good at all. She's coughing a fair bit and has a very sore throat but hopefully it's nothing too serious and she'll be back to normal very soon.

Once again, I am very sorry for not getting this posted sooner,

Alec

Today Fiona is feeling a bit better again. She is still feeling a slightly queasy but is managing to keep taking sips of water and has had a little lunch (which given the quality of the food is amazing in itself). She is feeling rather cold today but her blood pressure, oxygen saturation and heart rate are all looking good so hopefully she can snuggle down under another blanket and warm up a little.

Fiona is, as always, itching to get out of the hospital and back to her life outside. The doctors are still looking into the problems she's been experiencing but are hopefull that she will be ready to discharge in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Today Fiona has continued to have a mixed time. During the morning and early afternoon Fiona had felt quite nauseous and because of this she did not drink that much. This had the effect of pulling her blood pressure down and gave her a headache. She managed to drink some more fluids during the afternoon and after some more antiemetics she managed to eat a sandwich and drink a little more and was looking much better. Unfortunately as the evening wore on her nausea returned along with some stomach pains which the nurses and doctor were looking into as I left so hopefully she will feel a little better tomorrow.

Fiona is feeling much better this evening compared to yesterday. She is still feeling ill but looking much better than she was twenty-four hours ago. This afternoon the doctors carried out an endoscopy of her oesophagus and stomach and didn't find any evidence of bleeding, ulcers or oesophagitis although there was an excess of bile which they removed. Fiona has continued to suffer from bouts of nausea has managed to keep small amounts of fluids and solids down this evening and is now off the IV fluids and able to drink and eat freely.

The doctors are continuing to monitor her condition and are looking into the possible causes of the excess bile and the other symptoms which she has been experiencing. They hope that if things continue to improve as they have over the last 24 hours they may be able to discharge her over the weekend.

During Thursday afternoon Fiona started feeling very ill and started being sick. Unable to keep her medications down she went to the Medical Centre on Loughborough University campus and was seen by a doctor. They gave her injections of hydrocortisone and an antiemetic but unfortunately Fiona continued to be sick and as she was becoming dehydrated they made the decision to send her to Leicester Royal Infirmary for further treatment.

By midnight the doctors at LRI had managed to control Fiona's sickness but it had left her very dehydrated and in a lot of pain due to the rods and the many hours she had spent retching. They give her morphine (the first she has had since late last year) to reduce the pain, IV fluids to rehydrate her, further antiemetics to continue to control the vomiting and admitted her for further monitoring and treatment. By 06:00 she had managed to go for over six hours without vomiting although she still felt very ill.
